I am a lot of jealous. She says she's getting a slightly earlier manual one, as well. No Clue on engine or year. Also fuck kinja for eating my title.

Is she getting the one pictured? If so, that's somewhere in the 91-94 ish range. My favourite, tbh. The 4.0 straight-six is the engine you want, although the 2.5 isn't bad. I'd avoid Renix years (87-90) cause of buggy engine controls that no scan tool will read, but there are those who know it well and prefer it. The manual trannies behind the first couple years of the 4.0 (up to mid-88 I think) aren't particularly sturdy but won't be a problem if you don't beat on them. Avoid the 2.8L GM V6 engine like the plague. There was a decent 2.1L dizzle option for a few years, eventually with a factory turbo, but they're basically unicorns at this point.

The Renix machines are pretty good, once you unfuck the big connector on the firewall near the valve cover! They don't make quite as much power as the later HO engines, but in my opinion these things are over-powered anyway. They have way more power than brakes and the don't exactly hustle confidently around corners! My ultra worn out and tired 4.0 XJ hasn't been over 3,000 RPMs (on and off-road) in like 2 years! And it never needs to be... I feel like getting it going anywhere in a hurry is just asking for a disaster!

The Renix Jeeps need a lot of unfucking... http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/cruiser54s…

I drove my '91 Comanche a lot harder than I probably should have... Ultimately I lunched the 4.0's 310,000 mile main bearings at 115 mph. It's sitting in semi-permanent storage (i.e. my parents' yard 300 miles away) waiting for a rebuild.

This one is her mom's. She being my girlfriend, who daily drives this at the moment. She is soon to be getting an earlier model with a manual transmission, but doesn't know anything else about it but that.
